Introduction
An ultrasound is one of the most common and safest imaging tests available. It’s used to check organs, monitor pregnancy, and detect a wide range of medical conditions. At Bethwell Imaging Centre, we understand that many patients feel anxious before their first scan. This guide will help you know exactly what to expect — and how to prepare.
What Is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound (also known as a sonogram) uses high-frequency sound waves to produce live images of the inside of your body. It does not use radiation, making it completely safe for both adults and unborn babies.
Common Reasons for Ultrasound
- Checking the abdomen, kidneys, or liver
- Monitoring pregnancy and baby growth
- Examining blood flow using Doppler studies
- Diagnosing pelvic or thyroid problems
How to Prepare
Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound:
- Abdominal Scan: Fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment. This reduces gas in the intestines and improves image clarity.
- Pelvic Scan: Drink at least one litre of water and avoid urinating until after the scan. A full bladder helps visualize pelvic organs.
- Pregnancy Scan: Usually no special preparation is required, but you may be asked to drink water beforehand.
During the Scan
You’ll lie comfortably on a bed. A clear gel will be applied to the skin — it helps sound waves travel effectively. The technologist moves a small handheld probe (called a transducer) across the area being examined. You may feel gentle pressure, but it’s painless.
After the Scan
Once the procedure is done, the gel is wiped off and you can resume normal activities immediately. Your images are reviewed by a radiologist who will prepare a report for your doctor.
